February 2022 newsletter
Dear Friends,
We’re hoping this finds you safe and well after the drama that storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin brought with them?! As we continue to hunt for missing trampolines, fence panels and wheelie bins, we can only hope that March arrives more in the guise of a kitten than a lion and just keep focused on the joys that pancake day brings! Here’s our latest as we wave a very choppy February goodbye….
Dates for your diary!
We’re super excited to be featuring as part of Third Thursday’s programme on 17th March which sees local artists and cultural organisations take over spaces across central Brighton to showcase their creative work and make art installations, exhibitions, film projections and performances accessible to all.
Little Green Pig club members have been busy working on their Letters to the Earth as part of the global participatory campaign that’s inviting people of all ages and backgrounds, from every corner of the earth, to put pen to paper and express their hopes, fears, ambitions and love for the planet. At a time when the challenges facing our future can be overwhelming, expressing those thoughts through a letter to anything or any creature, be it a person, species, community or element, can feel that little bit more empowering. And that’s exactly what our club members will share in a beautifully curated Little Green Pig space on Gardner Street between 5pm - 7pm on the third Thursday of March. We’ll be able to give more detail on the exact location (or just come seek us out?) nearer the time, so do keep tuned to our social channels and we look forward to seeing you then.
Third Thursdays is a fantastic initiative by Brighton & Hove ABCD Cultural Recovery Plan and Brilliant Brighton Business, supported by Arts Council England, Brighton & Hove City Council, the Pebble Trust and Welcome Back Fund dedicated to rejuvenating Brighton’s city centre. It’s scheduled to be an ongoing event which recognises how local creatives can provide the dynamic behind making our post-pandemic streets a bustling hive of activity once again and we couldn’t be prouder to be part of that.
Brighton Festival 2022 and the return of Amplified!
We’re also thrilled to announce that Little Green Pig has been commissioned to present a Take Over weekend as part of the Brighton Festival 2022 within their new outdoor venue, the Riwaq, an elegant Arabic colonnade-style space on Hove Lawns. Over Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May, we’ll be hosting workshops, an open mic and drop in family sessions culminating with our annual Amplified event, which gives local young people the opportunity to share their deeply personal stories with a live audience. Check the Brighton Festival Programme for full details as more information is released in coming weeks.
And in other (club) news….
It’s been a busy term since our after school clubs returned this year and productive would be an understatement!
News has been the order of the day with Monday Club creating their own gazette full of current affairs including the theft of the Queen’s crown (all she needs right now!), a spate of crimes committed by chickens and the apprehension of Spiderman!! A superbly edited news sheet that our intrepid reporters, film reviewers and staff writers produced with amazing professionalism.
Tuesday Club at Moulsecoomb Primary School have been telling their stories through images and words using collaged poems and zine creations revealing equally skilled publishing techniques. Animated in both language and visuals, club members covered all their best things from pets, dream bedrooms and dinosaurs to space!
Meanwhile, Brighton based Thursday Club have been equally involved in reportage through their own news channel, broadcasting true life current affairs and other slightly more fantastic stories involving eyewitness accounts of crocodiles invading toilets. A particular favourite of ours is the clandestine meeting of ‘maths people in the houses of subtraction’! Watch on and meet our very own Little Green Pig George Alagiahs
Wishing you a very happy countdown to spring, we’re very much looking forward to longer, warmer days and sharing more in our March bulletin.
