Wild writing in Worthing! Little Green Pig visits BugCycle Garden
In June 2024 young writers from our After School Club at The Laurels Primary School explored the wonderful Creative Waves’ BugCycle Community Garden located in Worthing.
The children had a tour of the garden then hunted for what bugs and flowers they could spot. The sun was shining and the writers enjoyed time to let their imaginations run wild! Working with artist Nessy from Creative Waves, the group wrote down wishes and dreamt up insect patterns and flower designs. Nature provided plenty of inspiration for the writers' ideas to bloom!
Workshop leader writer Rayna shared, "the children absolutely loved the gardens and activities. They often draw inspiration from nature in their poems and stories so to go on a trip outdoors was brilliant."
Artist Nessy said, "The children wrote some heartfelt wishes about caring for nature & stopping climate change. What a great little bunch full of excitement and enthusiasm!"
The children will continue to develop their stories and poems about nature this term, supported by the Story Mentors Cloe, Holly and Tim. The group have a zine of their writing being published by Little Green Pig next week to share their amazing ideas and words.
Photos capturing the trip show some more of what the group got up to in their explorations. Thanks to Tunde Alabi-Hundeyin for the photography. Funding for this club thanks to the Fonthill Foundation.

Here are two poems inspired by their visit:
Bug Cycle
by Georgia, 11 years old
Aware of all surroundings
Down to every tiny petal
A wise grand oak
A guard
That seldomly leaves its post
Take a look around you
Enjoy where you are now.
The Great Garden
By Aidan, 8 years old
Soft lavender
Purple sticks
Smells soft
Giant reds
In the wild
From winter
Happy bees
Big butterflies
Amazing ants
Small pond
Big weeds just nice.
