October Newsletter

.

Hello Little Green Pig friends. Welcome to our October newsletter. As the nights draw in and things get chilly, settle down in a cosy spot to read about new projects and exciting ways to join in with and support our work.

GET INVOLVED - UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES

Amplified, one of our signature projects, is back for 2024! We're currently recruiting for young people aged 13 to 19 to take part in this exciting spoken word and music project, in partnership with AudioActive in Worthing.

Supported by Arts Council England, we're offering young people the opportunity to take part in a free five week project - empowering them to tell their stories on stage, develop skills and build their confidence. Save the date to join us for the final performance on Sunday 8 December, 2pm at AudioActive, Worthing.

More information and how to sign up here!

Green Matchas for Good, anyone?

We're excited to announce our new partnership with the wonderful East Brighton Cafe who have chosen us as their charity of the year! There are 3 ‘green’ delights on their delicious menu - Green Matcha, Green Smoothie and Green Eggs and Ham (that's with spinach and avocado rather than actual green eggs!) of which £1 goes to Little Green Pig. A great way to support us whilst enjoying tasty food. A massive thank you to Marilyn and her team at East Brighton Cafe, to our amazing Ambassador Dorothy Koomson, our Chair Pete Lawson and our Treasurer Sam O'Mahoney for all their support on launching this partnership.

Join us at Jubilee Library on Thursday 14 November to hear what our young writers have to say! Club Amplified is coming...

All of our Brighton and Hove After School Clubs have been busy this term creating personal pieces of writing, ready to share what matters to them most on stage.

Young writers from across our clubs in Moulsecoomb, Whitehawk, Central Brighton and Longhill High School will come together to perform from 5pm to 6.45pm in the Childrens' Area of Brighton's Jubilee Library. This performance is free and open to everyone to attend so do come along to hear what they have to share on the mic!

An update on the mystery of the Inklings...

Last newsletter, we shared reports of sightings of strange tiny creatures called "inklings" that we'd received from children at the Laurels Primary School, Worthing. Our friends at Strange Sussex went to investigate. To explore the adventures the children had last summer with these mythical miniature beings, take a look at this zine created with the young writers!

Earlier this month, we celebrated National Poetry Day by reflecting on the wide variety of wonderful places where Little Green Pig writers' poetry has ended up. From being displayed on Pevensey beach to Paralympic Parisian programmes to San Francisco! Poetry is one of the many forms of writing that Little Green Pig young writers choose to use to express themselves in our clubs and projects.

We're proud that Little Green Pig publications are now on display at the International Library of Youth Writing in San Francisco with our sister organisation 826 Valencia.

Here's a little video that we shared on National Poetry Day to share more ways we work with poetry!

As well as working longer term with children and young people at our weekly clubs, Little Green Pig also offer one-day and shorter projects in schools across Sussex. Recently we launched a new workshop for Dorothy Stringer, supporting nine Year 7 to Year 9 students to create their own "Play in a Day" with Tanaka Mhishi and Little Green Pig mentors. Students worked together to create a short play suitable for podcast or radio formats and we had fantastic feedback from both students and teachers. If you're interested in booking a creative workshop for your school or community group, get in touch with Nikki.

Thanks to Mahima!

Mahima Yasmin worked with us over the summer as Little Green Pig's Evaluation and Communications Intern. She did a brilliant job helping us to gather feedback on our work this year. Thank you Mahima! We wish you all the best in finishing your degree and whatever comes next.

Exciting Funding News

We are delighted to have been awarded a new grant from Arts Council England for our project Story Journeys. This will support our work in Eastbourne and Worthing up until summer 2025. We have also secured funding from the Postcode Lottery Trust supporting day to day running costs and so a big thank you to players of the National Lottery and People’s Postcode Lottery.

A big THANK YOU also goes to our regular and one off individual donors. Sometimes they choose to stay anonymous so we can't thank them directly so we're posting our thanks here instead. This support makes a huge difference. THANK YOU!

In December we're taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge with a £6,000 target for the week long online campaign starting on 3rd December. Watch this space for more information how to take part and make your donation go twice as far.
